Artist Statement for Current work

Clay is ubiquitous throughout every civilization—-the need to use this material as a way to pass a peoples history seems to be an evolutionary need.

I have a personal need to express and understand my world by utilizing this material.  I long to connect with others and hope when my work is brought into their homes it will bring both utility/light and joy.

My most recent work anthropomorphizes animals in order to relay certain concepts dealing with the human condition.  The “Reckoning Vessel” for example is comprised of three distinct animals all of which can symbolize transcendence—the owl can reside in both the heavenly world as well as the earthly realm.  The mythological mermaid, as well as the turtle can also travel between worlds.

Our human experience leads us to great times of change. When we are to enter new chapters, at times, we become a reckoning vessel—we are containers ie vessels of our past. In order to proceed to the present, we must reckon upon our journey to process and move forward.   I would like the viewer to find their own meaning and story when viewing my work—and sense a connection to both the piece and the material.

Thank you for your time, Leslie Hinton
